Travel isn't arriving somewhere.
It's choosing how you want to live the road.

The challenge

The project began with a strategic-personal-brand brief for Leslie, a Dominican travel creator with two unusual assets for the category: a lifelong relationship with the sea and the tourism industry, growing up inside it rather than discovering it as a content opportunity; and genuine expertise in cruceros — a niche the global travel-content market consistently underserves because most creators chase generic destination content.

But the brief surfaced an immediate strategic problem: a personal brand built around one creator has a structural ceiling. It can't scale beyond one person's time. It can't outlive its founder. And it can't ever fully professionalize, because the moment Leslie tries to take a week off, the brand stops broadcasting.

The category context made the answer harder. Travel-creator and travel-agency brands almost always default to one of two registers: high-energy "your dream vacation awaits" sales aesthetics, all caps and aggressive CTAs; or generic minimalist wanderlust-stock-photography aesthetics, indistinguishable from any other agency. Neither matched Leslie's actual voice, and neither could carry the cruise-niche territory she was uniquely positioned to own.

How I thought about it

01

TRANSLATE THE PERSONAL BRIEF INTO A BRAND BRIEF

I led the discovery phase by running Leslie's personal-brand interview through a structural translation: every answer about Leslie had to be re-interpreted as a possible answer about the brand the agency could become. Four candidate brand-truths surfaced from her personal narrative: the sea as a constant (not a destination, a relationship); travel as transformation, not escape; calm pacing as a value (the opposite of category-default urgency); and cruise expertise as defensible territory (most travel brands chase trending destinations — Leslie owned a niche the category undervalues).

02

BUILD THE AGENCY ON TOP OF THE PERSONAL VOICE

The agency's name, Travel Guru, intentionally signals expertise (guru = guide, sage) without locking the brand to Leslie's name or face. That single naming decision is what makes the brand scalable: Leslie can be its founder and primary face today, and the brand can hire and grow tomorrow without renaming. Why: Because we believe traveling is a way of returning to yourself. How: Designing unique routes inspired by the sea, combining wellness, culture, and discovery. What: Maritime travel and experiences — Caribbean cruises, coastal escapes, personalized itineraries.

03

ARCHETYPE SPLIT - 70% SAGE, 30% EXPLORER

Using Mark & Pearson's framework, I defined Travel Guru as 70% Sage (primary — calm authority, clear information, expert guidance, conscious choices; the brand speaks from knowledge, not hype) and 30% Explorer (secondary — movement, discovery, openness, the invitation to leave the known and find something new). That 70/30 split is the spine of every voice and visual decision. Heavy on calm authority, with just enough adventurous spark to keep the brand from feeling sleepy.

04

DEFINE THE ANTI-PATTERNS EXPLICITLY

One of the most distinctive pages in the brand book is "Como NO debe sonar Travel Guru" — explicitly listing the four registers the brand will never use: aggressive sales, motivational cliché, cold/technical, and too youthful/informal. That guardrail is what protects the brand from drifting back into the two register defaults of the category.

05

A POETIC COLOR SYSTEM, NOT A DECORATIVE ONE

Every color in the palette carries a name that connects it to the brand's maritime / journey vocabulary. The names matter as much as the hex values: they force every team member to reach back into the brand's narrative every time a color is chosen. Ruta Azul, Blanco Salino, Tierra Guía, Verde Solar, Señal del Sol — each one earns its place in the system because it carries a piece of the brand's story.

The system

LOGOTYPE

A sun-star icon sits beside the wordmark — an organic, slightly imperfect five-point star representing guidance, orientation, intuition, and the light that accompanies any journey. The icon works as a stand-alone isotype on social, packaging, and signage.

A composite mark: "Travel" in a handwritten script (fluid, human, the warmth of a personal voice), paired with "Guru" in solid geometric sans-serif (clarity, expertise, knowledge). The two typographic registers are intentional, the brand carries Leslie's warmth, and the agency's authority.

What the project actually did

*

Translated a personal brand into a scalable agency — the single most consequential move of the project. Travel Guru can grow without renaming the day Leslie steps back, and Leslie can scale her time today without becoming a bottleneck.

*

Anchored the brand to a defensible niche — maritime / cruise / wellness travel is a position no major Dominican travel agency was credibly occupying with this register.

*

Established a voice and visual system that can carry both the founder's warmth and the agency's authority in the same surface, without compromising either.

*

Defined a category-redefining frame — travel as a way of returning to yourself, not as escape, performance, or acquisition. That position is the brand's moat in a category where everyone else is selling the destination.

What I learned

The translation itself is the work. When a client arrives with a personal-brand brief but a commercial intent, the most valuable thing a brand designer does is reframe the question. Travel Guru exists because we didn't take "build me a personal brand" at face value. The translation from personal to agency is what gave the founder a brand she can outgrow without outgrowing.

Niches are more strategic than aesthetics. The single most defensible asset of this brand isn't its color palette or its logotype — it's the cruise / maritime territory we anchored it to. In a category as saturated as travel, the brand that says "Caribbean cruises, designed slowly" will outlast the brand that says "travel and find yourself" every time. Aesthetics reinforce the niche, but the niche is the strategy.

Two registers, deliberately split. Travel Guru's signature is the deliberate split between the handwritten Travel and the geometric Guru. That same split structures every part of the system: warmth + authority, founder + agency, calm + curiosity, Sage + Explorer. When a brand needs to carry two truths at once, the answer is rarely to average them — it's to hold them in tension and let them coexist.
