The challenge

Dos Fuegos started with a story most brand projects would kill for: María José's father in Colombia is famous in his family for his asados — barrel-grill cookouts that turn every reunion into a ritual. On a visit to Colombia, he taught the technique to Julio, María José's husband, and gifted them a barrel to take back to Mexico.

In Mexico City, where barrel-grilling is uncommon, the couple started cooking at home for friends. Within months, they were prepping every Saturday for a market stall, building a small but loyal following on flavor, charisma, and the simple novelty of being two people who actually showed up for their food.

But by the time they reached out, they had a problem most early-stage food brands have: the product worked. The brand didn't.

How I thought about it

01

A REAL CONTRABRIEF, NOT A DECK OF MOODBOARDS

Before any visual work, I produced what I call a ContraBrief: the research document that answers the founders' brief instead of just transcribing it. It included a full competitive audit of nine brands, a three-segment audience map, and a SWOT that surfaced the real strategic openings: barrel-grilling as category-of-one in Mexico, binational fusion as an unoccupied angle, and the founders' personal charisma as an asset most brands have to manufacture.

02

FIND THE BRIDGE, NOT THE BLEND

The single most important strategic move was refusing to design a "Mexican-meets-Colombian" mashup. Mashups read as gimmicks. Bridges read as identities. The answer was the armadillo: a small, armored animal native to both Mexico and Colombia, capable of curling into itself. That last detail mattered, the armadillo's posture mirrors the shape of the barrel, the brand's signature cooking instrument. One animal, two countries, one shape that visualizes the brand's central ritual.

03

DEFINE THE SPINE: WHY / HOW / WHAT

I structured the strategic foundation around the Golden Circle, translated into a kitchen vocabulary the founders could actually use. Below that, four value axes (ser · tener · hacer · crecer) turned abstract values into operational rules.

04

VOICE AS A SEALED ASSET

I locked the brand's tone around one signature: "guapo / guapa." The founders had been told repeatedly by customers in the market that they were los guapos del mercado. I took that real piece of customer language and turned it into the brand's seal — installed across packaging, uniforms, signage, and menu.

WHY

We light experiences cooked slow and remembered forever.

HOW

In the smoke that smells like home, the heat that gathers, the flavor that starts a conversation.

WHAT

Each meal is more than a bite — it's a smile, an anecdote, a memory.

The system

LOGOTYPE
PNG-27.png

A custom-built typographic logo where "DOS" sits vertically, integrated into the F of FUEGOS, and the second O is replaced by a hand-drawn armadillo curled into a ball.

The wordmark is structured and modern; the armadillo, illustrated in linocut style, is artisanal and warm. That contrast — modern type, artisanal mark — is the entire visual thesis of the brand: modern, but with soul.

ISOTYPE
PNG-22.png

The isotype works on its own as a silent brand stamp on coasters, packaging stickers, embroidered patches on aprons, and signage. The linocut texture is intentional: it borrows the language of artisanal printmaking, signaling that this is a brand made by people, not a chain.

CHARACTER - GUAPILLO

The armadillo isn't only an isotype. As "Guapillo," he becomes a small narrative character with four illustrated poses, used across packaging patterns, social posts, and apparel. Not a corporate mascot — a recurring visual signature, like a small joke the brand keeps making with its audience.

POWER MESSAGES

What the project actually did

*

Built a complete strategic foundation the founders can hand to any future hire — chef, social manager, packaging manufacturer — and maintain coherence without me in the room.

*

Established a distinctive visual position in a saturated category. None of the nine competitors I audited occupy the territory Dos Fuegos now does.

*

Designed a system that scales from the current weekend market stall to the founders' eventual brick-and-mortar location.

*

Produced a 51-page brand book — a tool the founders use as both internal compass and external sales asset when courting private-event clients.

What I learned

Bridges beat blends. When designing for two cultures, find the single object that legitimately belongs to both. The armadillo carries the duality silently — that's what protects the brand from feeling gimmicky as it scales.

Voice is an asset, not a deliverable. The guapo / guapa signature became one of the most recognized parts of the system, it's what customers quote back to the founders. Voice deserves the same systematic treatment as color or type.

A real ContraBrief saves the project. Skipping competitive analysis is the most expensive shortcut a brand designer can take. Without it, this would have been a nice-looking taco brand. With it, it became a brand with a defensible reason to exist.
